Canadian businesses deserve price parity on hardware and software

Canadians are getting ripped off.

For too long, we’ve been overpaying for software and hardware compared to our neighbours south of the border. Much like we also pay more for many retail goods including books, movies, clothes, and the list goes on.

Some salt was poured in that metaphorical sore point by the just-launched Apple iPad 2. Not only was tablet available sa couple of weeks earlier south of the border, but Americans paid $20 less for the tablet – $499 instead of $519 for the 16 GB, Wi-Fi only version for example.

Canadians’ holiday tech shopping plans

Canadians who find their stockings stuffed with productivity-boosting electronic gadgets this Christmas are most likely to find a laptop, and equally as likely to find a desktop computer crammed in there as they are a tablet tucked neatly in the toe.

Delvinia Data Collection recently conducted a poll for ITBusiness.ca of its AskingCanadians panel members, asking what technology they planned to buy this holiday season. Laptops or netbooks came out on top with 18 per cent of Canadians over the age of 18 saying they were going to buy one. Smartphones were the next most popular item at almost 16 per cent, while desktop computers received an 8 per cent respone and tablets 7.6 per cent.

POS, supply chain systems top Canadian retailers’ IT purchase choices for 2010

  Majority of Canadian retailers prefer sticking to the tried and true when it comes to software purchases, according to a recent survey of the industry.

In a poll of 34-mid-to-large sized retailers, the Retail Council of Canada (RCA) also found that these businesses may be embracing social media technologies but are still wary of cloud computing.
