Lenovo ThinkPad: four reasons it’s the right tablet for business
Aug 24th
By Tony Bradley
Tablet headlines have been dominated for the past week by the sudden demise of the TouchPad, and the subsequent fire sale by HP to clear out inventory. But, just because HP is bailing on the tablet industry doesn’t mean the world has come to a halt.
Today, Lenovo launched its ThinkPad Tablet–an Android tablet with more of a business focus than some of its rivals.
Despite the fact that the Apple iPad is being tested or deployed at 86 percent of Fortune 500 companies, and that businesses of all sizes have found innovative ways to use the iOS tablet in uniquely productive ways, there are still those who will argue that the tablet is a consumer gadget incapable of meeting the needs of business professionals.
Canadian businesses deserve price parity on hardware and software
Apr 21st
Canadians are getting ripped off.
For too long, we’ve been overpaying for software and hardware compared to our neighbours south of the border. Much like we also pay more for many retail goods including books, movies, clothes, and the list goes on.
Some salt was poured in that metaphorical sore point by the just-launched Apple iPad 2. Not only was tablet available sa couple of weeks earlier south of the border, but Americans paid $20 less for the tablet – $499 instead of $519 for the 16 GB, Wi-Fi only version for example.
The media tablet ecosystem race
Mar 26th
When the iPad was finally revealed in 2010, it took time for the market to know how to categorize the device; everyone settled on simply creating a new category.
One year on, the lead that Apple has is a replay of its iPod-iPhone momentum, but Google’s Android caught up quickly. This year will be a truly fascinating one of winners and losers. Not interested? You should be. Media tablets have re-written the rules.
iPad. You can do everything you want on one really. If you’re a high-end originator of Photoshop masterpieces or an individual with particularly fat fingers, you might not be so convinced, but if you try one for a reasonable period of time you’ll start to get frustrated with the boot-up time of your old laptop, the lack of software apps to enhance your entertainment or productivity and the whole battery-cable-charger-airport-connectivity thing. Why I won’t replace my iPad with an iPad 2
Mar 23rd
Apple released the latest version to its super successful tablet, the iPad2 which went on sale on March 11 in the US. The iPad 2 is expected to be on sale in Canada on March 25th.
If you are like me you will be asking yourself, should I stick with the iPad or should I upgrade to the iPad2? And if you will be purchasing the iPad for the first time then you will be wondering which one you should choose. Let’s examine the two versions of the iPad. Read the rest of this entry »
iPad 2: Will the ‘magic’ live on?
Mar 8th
By Krista Napier
On March 2nd, Steve Jobs announced Apple’s latest gadget, the iPad 2. The street date for Canada is March 25.
When the first iPad launched last year, Jobs described it as “magical”. So does that label apply to the iPad 2? It’s always a tough act to follow the wonderment of the first born child. In this case, iPad 2 has some incremental features and functionality that set it apart from the first version, including:
- Rear facing HD camera, and front facing VGA camera
- 33 per cent thinner 8.8mm (13.4mm)
- 15 per cent lighter: 1.3 pounds (vs. 1.5 pounds)
- Two colours – black and white
- Up to 2x faster CPU and up to 9x faster graphics
- Dual core processors
- 3-axis gyroscopes (aids in gesture-based actions, navigation and gaming)
- Running iOS 4.3
These features will also help the iPad 2 remain competitive with the competition that will be in the market in 2011, and will have many features and functions that were missing in the first iPad. Samsung, Motorola, RIM, and others are not in the market yet, but have been announced and expected to launch in 2011. Read the rest of this entry »
Media tablets: More than ‘executive jewelry’
Jan 28th
At a recent industry event, I was asked if I agreed with the term “executive jewelry” to describe media tablets.
I’d argue that most people who pre-ordered or stood in line to buy the first generation media tablets (iPad) when they hit the market back in May 2010, were probably…on some level… looking for at least a little bit of attention by sporting the latest tech fashion (aka jewelry), myself included.
But generally speaking, I wouldn’t agree that media tablets are synonymous with executive jewelry, for two key reasons. Read the rest of this entry »
CES blows up tablet hype, poll deflates it
Jan 13th
If there’s one thing that we know about Las Vegas, it’s that the town is all hype. A thick veneer of glitz and superimposed luxury disguise what is really a seedy money trap – the actual experience a far cry from the luxury and class promised by its first appearance. So let’s not forget what we know about Las Vegas on the week it hosts the Consumer Electronics Show.
CES has become the flagship technology show for manufacturers to showcase their latest gadgets and build up buzz about new products. Just as Detroit has become synonymous with the auto industry for its North American Auto Show, Las Vegas is now well entrenched in the technology industry. But what takes place at both shows is not necessarily a portent of things to come. Just as very few people will be driving the new electric cars and hybrids shown off in Detroit, very few will be buying tablet computers in the near future.
Microsoft to roll out ARM-based iPad rival in 2011?
Dec 22nd
Microsoft is reportedly set to release a new version of its Windows operating system specifically designed for tablet devices. The new OS, which will run on chips from ARM Holdings, will be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show on January, according to the Wall Street Journal.
It might be easy to dismiss that Microsoft has already missed the boat on tablet devices as reports circulate that rival Apple is already preparing an iPad2 . To date, more than 3 million iPads have been sold worldwide while the market is simultaneously being flooded by Android-based iPad alternatives.
However, window of opportunity hasn’t closed for a Microsoft tablet device to compete with Apple’s iPad. Read the rest of this entry »
Canadians choose WikiLeaks as tech news story of the year
Dec 21st
Julian Assange might be runner-up to Mark Zuckerberg for Time’s venerable Person of the Year, but he is top choice by Canadians as the tech story of the year, according to a new poll.
ITBusiness.ca asked members of Delvinia’s AskingCanadians panel what they thought the top tech story of the year was. We narrowed it down for them to five different choices; WikiLeaks triggers a “cyber war”, Apple releases, Governments threaten BlackBerry ban, Google’s Street View cars steal Wi-Fi data, or Dalai Lama’s computer compromised by Chinese hackers. WikiLeaks was the overwhelming top choice with 52.8 per cent selecting it as story of the year, and Apple’s iPad was the runner-up with 25.6 per cent.
