Does Canada offer more competitive mobile rates than the U.S. ?

by Yale Holder

For years I’ve been hearing how much more competitive the US market is than in Canada. So imagine my surprise to find that maybe that is not the case anymore. You will be surprised at what I learned from my visit to the big apple a few days ago….

I was in the US for a few days and I decided to get my sister a cell phone as she would be staying a few months and needed a cell phone. So my first thought was to get a simple $25 unlimited plan voice only no data and given that I’m in New York city, one of the most competitive cities in the world that shouldn’t be a problem.

I’m not a newbie to the cell phone industry, so I looked for the equivalent, Wind Mobile or Mobilicity unlimited type carrier in New York and found one with Metro PCs. Having found it I walked in and asked for my $25 unlimited plan with a basic phone….”sorry sir but we don’t have those plans any more but you can have the unlimited $45 plan with unlimited data”. iPhone 4S packs in over 200 improvements

 by Kye Husbands

Looks like we all got it pretty wrong today with Apple’s non announcement of the highly anticipated iPhone 5. What we did get, however, was a serious upgrade to the existing iPhone4 in the same package called the iPhone4S.

The new iPhone 4s enhancements are really all about the guts, you know the inner workings, but for many a little soft on the glory. You see, once a new design for the iPhone was off the table or a new iPhone5 many peoples expectations were thrown a curve ball, so everything else seemed pale in comparison. Will Motorola’s Droid Pro replace the BlackBerry for businesses?

This week Motorola announced their new cell phone, the DROID PRO. It is being targeted as a business cell phone or the next productivity powerhouse.  Motorola Mobility CEO said that business users will drop their BlackBerry phones for the new Droid Pro. Quite a bold statement for a phone that has not been released as yet.

While we cannot predict how this phone will perform here in Canada, we can review its features and investigate whether the phone is indeed suited to be the Business Productivity powerhouse as suggested by Motorola.

Nokia’s mobile strategy and measurement challenges

We live in an increasingly mobile world and the decision to extend brand communication to the mobile channel seems inevitable.  On the other hand, making this decision in a way that will pay off in the long-run is a less apparent process.

Mobile data measurement brings with it challenges that are very different from fixed web measurement.  For example carrier restrictions, platform variations and mobile browser limitations are such that mobile product applications don’t easily lend themselves to uniform measurement across devices.  In order to be able to use data as a strategic asset, measurement standards must be such that they can be applied to a wide range if devices.

Interactive Ontario recently hosted an AMA webinar featured Greg Dowling, Vice President of Mobile Strategy & Measurement at Semphonic and former Head of Analysis for Nokia.  Dowling was leading Nokia’s recent initiative to implement first worldwide mobile analytics measurement standard, and his insights can be applied to mobile marketing.

Looking at mobile phone penetration by manufacturers, Nokia leads the way with over a third of the worldwide handset market.  In the smartphone category, Nokia’s Symbian operating system makes up just over half of the smartphones used globally, followed by RIM at 20 per cent and iPhone at 15 per cent. Text messages that count – mobile giving for Haiti

Tap, tap, tap send.

Many younger mobile phone users just love to text. It’s fast, it’s cheap (free for some plans) and it’s fun. And lately it can be life saving. Several Canadian carriers and charitable organizations are using SMS technology to get much needed money and relief good to earthquake devastated Haiti.
