Tablet Review: BlackBerry Playbook vs. Apple iPad vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab
With BlackBerry set to launch its first tablet computer in early 2011, they are a number of positives for RIM with this device, so what are they.
1. Dimensions – The device is slightly bigger than the Samsung Galaxy Tab and about 33 per cent lighter than Apple’s iPad.
2. Online Capability – It can be tethered to your BlackBerry and no separate data plan is required. This is huge, as we all know how efficient BlackBerry is on data bandwidth and therefore your pocketbook.
3. Flash Friendly – The Playbook will be Flash ready so this is another major bonus in terms of being able to view richer content when browsing online.
4. Perhaps most importantly the Playbook will allow RIM to leverage its industry leading network security and provide business and enterprise clients with another alternative to equipping their staff with tablet computers.
5. While the price is yet to be confirmed we believe the Playbook will be priced very competitively and certainly cheaper than the iPad.
So let’s check out a side-by-side comparison of the upcoming BlackBerry Playbook alongside Apple’s iPad and Samsung’s Galaxy Tablet.
While pricing is yet to be confirmed, as originally reported by BlackBerry Cool, we also believe the BlackBerry Playbook will be priced from $399 to $599 for the varying models.
If your decision will be made based on performance, RIM just released this video demonstration comparing the BlackBerry Playbook and Apple’s iPad on browser speed, Adobe Flash support and HTML5 performance.

Definitely going for a PlayBook when they’re available. I’m already a BlackBerry user, so the ability to connect the two using Bluetooth is a key factor. I’m also really keen on the dual-core processor and multi-threading OS, as well as the better security features of the BlackBerry platform.

Ultimately the customers will be the judges. At this point iPad seem to fend off the most successful challenger, Samsung Galaxy Tab, when it comes to their respective customer satisfaction levels. Since the Playbook won’t go on sale until AFTER the next generation iPad (iPad 2) comes out, it doesn’t make any sense to compare the current iPad with a product that is planned for sale some months in the future.
If you are going to compare future products that are currently not available, you should be comparing iPad 2 to the Playbook. The iPad 2 will likely be announced, with full specs, sometime in the next few weeks.
The other alternative is to wait until both the iPad 2 and the Playbook are actual shipping products (with iPad 2 rumored to be released first) before making your comparisons.
But comparing a product that will be superseded BEFORE the Playbook goes on sale, makes as much sense as comparing the current iPad to a 2009 Archos tablet.

Wow…really…these comparisons are idiotic. The samsung is a 7″ phone and the playbook doesn’t exist in the marketplace. I agree with ViewRoyal, compare like products when they are available not before and are of like size and form factor. Do you compare 37″ lcd tvs to 55″ lcd tvs?…no because they are diferent products for a different demographic…you may argue that the demographics are the same but you would be wrong as is your comparison. Size matters with any product thats why BMW has a 3 series and a 7 series to fit that demographic.

Strange comparison. All pretty much irrelevant since the iPad3 will blow away the 2011 Playbook and don’t get me started on the iPad4 vs. 2011 Playbook comparison… Sounds stupid, right? Just like comparing a machine for which we have no clue on true battery life or 3G performance via bluetooth. Heck! We don’t even know the price. Since you are happy to speculate to this extent, why not try this. Throw in an iPad 2 with 2 cores, 12 hours of battery, front facing camera, quad the screen rez, 20% lighter at the same or lower price.

Forgot to mention… iPad has a proven tablet O/S based on Mac OS/X which itself comes from NeXT which comes from BSD/UNIX. The Playbook has a brand new O/S from RIMMs perspective and I don’t recall seeing QNX on a tablet before. I have more confidence in the QNX people then RIMM.

Can’t figure out why this is titled “Tablet Review: BlackBerry Playbook vs. Apple iPad vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab”.
It reads more like a marketing blurb for the Playbook. Was it submitted by RIM????
Where is the real comparison of the Samsung to the iPad
Oh, and the table in the middle? Can’t read it!!!

Couple of factors to throw in here: a 7″ screen and a 9.7″ sound like they are nearly the same size, but they aren’t. You get about half of the screen area of the iPad. This makes a HUGE difference imho.
The two non-iPad entries are, however, lighter. The Blackberry, being vaporware, weighs nothing at all!
(yes, it was completely stupid to compare the Playbook to an iPad ahead of what’s actually out in the market when the Playbook finally arrives.)
Also, in the article you say it will “certainly” be cheaper than an iPad, but in fact the prices you’ve posted aren’t cheaper by even a buck. The “smallest” available iPad is 16GB and sells for $499 — exactly the same price you have listed for the 16GB Playbook.
Finally, some food for thought: why did the iPad become such a smashing success? Because it already had 100,000+ apps available for it on day one, it has a great OS and because it’s a stunningly good “1.0″ product.
I find the Playbook intriguing and I wait (im)patiently to check one out in person, but unless RIM comes up with LOTS of *killer* apps at rock-bottom prices before launch AND its quality is absolutely fantastic (hardware and OS), I’m not seeing the PB doing anywhere near as well. I wish them luck, though!

Well I guess you have to give the team at Apple credit these days when years later after losing the OS battle to Windows back in the hay day. They have taken the lesson they learned back then and aliped to today in that hardware is driven by the application portfolio of a product and not the product itself.
So in the application landscape of the tablet world the iPad and now iPad 2 is the hands down winner, so can the other guys catch-up. Time will tell but considering the lessons Apple learned years ago I don’t see that happening.
I’m sure as long as the other players can ramp up their application portfolio for their products they may have a fighting chance but Apple is already well down the experience curve.
Also talk about added pressure for competitors a 9 month product life cycle wow…
BTW no I don’t own a tablet at this point but the iPad 2 is really putting pressure on my wallet to go out and buy the iPad 2 with 64GB and 3G for our new connected world.

Apple iPad 2 for apps and Goodreader for reading PDFs and Zinio magazines
RIM Playbook for enterprise secure apps and highly secure BBM and email off the BES platform. Smaller form factor means it fits in my trench coat and or suit jacket so presentations off a Panasonic Projector is easier
Kindle for reading books and in the sunlight is a better solution
If I get a deal on a Android tablet I may consider it
so its all good choose the tools you need to succeed best Road Warriors!!!!
